Why is Fatty Acid Biosynthesis a Therapeutic Target?
Targeting fatty acid biosynthesis can be an effective strategy for developing new antimicrobial therapies. Since many pathogens have unique enzymes involved in this pathway that are distinct from those in humans, inhibitors can be designed to specifically target these microbial enzymes without harming the host. For instance, Isoniazid is a well-known drug that inhibits the fatty acid biosynthesis enzyme InhA in Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
