Many people with HIV experience flu-like symptoms within 2 to 4 weeks of infection, known as acute HIV infection. These symptoms can include fever, sore throat, rash, and swollen lymph nodes. After the initial stage, the virus enters a chronic phase, which may last for years without noticeable symptoms but continues to damage the immune system.
