What is the COVAX Facility?
The
COVAX Facility is a global initiative co-led by the World Health Organization (WHO), Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI). It aims to ensure equitable access to
COVID-19 vaccines for all countries, especially low- and middle-income nations that might otherwise struggle to secure doses. The facility is part of the
Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator, an international collaboration to accelerate the development, production, and equitable access to COVID-19 tests, treatments, and vaccines.
How Does COVAX Work?
COVAX pools resources from participating countries and organizations to support the development, production, and procurement of vaccines. It negotiates directly with vaccine manufacturers to secure doses at competitive prices. By ensuring a diverse portfolio of vaccines, COVAX reduces the risk of relying on a single vaccine platform and increases the chance of success. Countries participating in COVAX can either self-finance their vaccine purchases or receive assistance to cover costs, particularly in the case of financially constrained nations.
